Chapter 12
Emily
I'm standing in the middle of Hudson's living room, surrounded by boxes that contain the bits and pieces of my life, feeling a whirlwind of gratitude and disbelief. I can't shake the warmth from his family's welcome or how they all pitched in to help me move, their laughter echoing off the walls, their jokes making the burden of relocation feel like a family affair.
The house is spacious, and I take it all in. The pictures of on the mantle of Hudson and Avery, the well-worn couch that looks perfect for movie nights, the kitchen that smells faintly of coffee and baked bread. It's a home, and suddenly I'm a part of it.
Hudson approaches me, his green eyes catching mine with an intensity that sends a shiver down my spine.
"My mom just texted," he says, scratching the back of his neck. "Avery's other grandparents asked her to watch Avery tonight, so... you'll meet her sooner than we thought."
Nervous excitement bubbles up inside me. I've always loved Avery when she's come into the diner either with Hudson or her other family. She's the sweetest little thing. Easy to love, but I think part of it has always been because she's Hudson's daughter. I sigh to myself. I've always had feelings for him, even if I tried to deny them and push them off as just attraction because the man is hot as sin. But it's more than that. "I can't wait to see her outside of work," I manage to say, my voice steady despite the butterflies.
I glance around at the boxes again and clear my throat. "Um, where should I put my stuff? My bedroom is...?"
Hudson's gaze falters for a second before he speaks. "I thought... you could move into my room." He rushes to add, "I won't sleep in there with you except for when Avery is here to keep up appearances."
The suggestion knocks the wind out of me for a moment. His room? Sharing his most personal space? The intimacy of it makes my heart race.
"That's not necessary," I say quickly, almost too quickly. "I can take another room and just come to your room whenever it's needed." My mouth instantly goes dry at that thought.
Inside, though, thereâs a desire whispering in the back of my mind. The thought of being surrounded by his things every night sends an unexpected thrill through me. To be where he rests his head, relaxes his body, breathes out the dayâs stress... Itâs ridiculous how much I yearn for that closeness when weâre nothing more than two people bound by a mutual need.
But boundaries are important. Theyâre what will keep this whole arrangement from crumbling beneath us. Or so I keep telling myself anyway.
"It's no trouble, really. My room has the best view," he says with a chuckle. "I want you to have the best while you're here.â
While I'm here⦠A stark reminder that I won't always be. I seriously need to prepare for that. He says I can quit Lottie's
